Once your dog has mastered the retrieve (the dog picking up, holding and returning the dumbbell to the handler) it is time to teach the dog to retrieve a “dead” object. A ‘dead’ object is something that the dog doesn’t see thrown and it never moves. The Gloves, along with the Scent Articles, both require dead retrieves. In the ring, three gloves are placed across one side of the ring while the dog and handler face the other direction. Upon the judge’s order, the dog and handler pivot together to face the correct glove as indicated by the judge. The dog is sent with a verbal command and hand signal to retrieve the one indicated and must retrieve ONLY the indicated glove. At a brisk pace, the dog will go directly to and pick up the glove, without mouthing or playing with it and return to the handler. After returning, the dog must sit directly in front of the handler and hold the glove until the judge orders ‘Take it” and then on command, the dog must go briskly to heel position and sit.
