Teaching Backing in Heel

  • With your dog in heel (not in a sit) have your left hand at your side with your leash taught in a reining position.
  • As your rein back on your leash, give your dog your heel command.
  • Yes, I use my heel command anytime I want my dog to remain in position whether we are going forward, backward, sideways or not moving at all.
  • Take 1 (one) step back with your LEFT foot.  Praise and reward your dog.
  • Spend time engaging between ALL repetitions.
  • Add an additions step ONLY once your dog understands the first step back.
  • Stay at slow pace until your dog can do multiple steps successfully.
  • WATCH YOUR LEFT SHOULDER and make sure they remain forward.
  • ALWAYS spend time with foundations before moving on in training.
