Teaching #3 Sign – Halt, Sit, Forward
While heeling, THE HANDLER HALTS AND THE DOG SITS in heel position. (Stationary) (Principal parts are in ALL CAPS.)
Skill your dog needs to know for this SIGN:
- Straight line heeling.
- Halt footwork cue and auto sit. (While Rally Rules allows the handler to give a “sit” command, your performance will be quicker and cleaner if your dog has a reliable “sit” when you stop.
- DIG – Distraction Initiate Games training
- OWF – One Way Focus training
- Desire built in any skill associated with this sign.
There are not specific requirements in either Rally or Obedience regarding which foot a handler uses to start or stop heeling motion. Stepping off and performing “Halts” consistently with the left foot will enable your dog to better “read” your cues accurately. Since there isn’t regulation requirements there is really no “wrong foot”, it is handler / trainer preference.
