The following DRILL is one I use to test my dog’s knowledge of Heeling. Games are added randomly to keep Desire and effort high. ALWAYS air on the side of too much reward and stay away from boring!
Catch Up! – Teach your dog HOW TO catch up before adding motion. Then, let your dog see you toss a treat behind you or over off your left side. As you tell your dog to “GET” the treat, start heeling forward and away from your dog. As soon as your dog starts to grab the treat, give your “heel” command. Reward your dog with a game as soon as he is in heel position and focused on you. Bump up the game when heeling by sitting or dropping your dog while you continue to heel. While in motion, call your dog to heel. Loads of games for him rushing to get into position AND focused on you.
